Biography: Liza Weil's childhood was spent traveling around the world with her parents, who were members of The Mad House of London, a prestigious comedy troupe known throughout Europe. At the age of 7, Liza's family settled in a small town in Pennsylvania, and soon after, she began performing in local theater. Without any formal training, her parents helped guide her career, permitting Liza to travel several times a month to audition for roles in Manhattan. After a series of standout theatrical performances in such plays as "Our Town" and "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds," casting directors began to take notice of Liza. She has also appeared Off-Broadway in the Playwright's Horizon production of "Life By Asphyxiation" and has performed onstage in several regional productions, including "The Miracle Worker" and "Fifteen Minute Hamlet," among others. She made her feature film debut in Whatever (1998) which premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. Actress Liza Weil turns the mere act of watching others into a dramatic feat--she's so subtly expressive, you can't stop watching her. As Anna, the wry, cautious, chain-smoking high schooler in Susan Skoog's indie release, Whatever, Weil observes the behavior of the damaged souls around her with brows slightly raised, her big eyes taking everything in. And though this look is like a uniform for the steely teenager, each time she dons it, it's a little different: You can see her restrained amusement at a stoned-out-of-his-head philosopher, her nervous acceptance of a line of coke from an older guy, her shy pleasure in receiving a compliment from an art teacher. Watching and weighing her options are Anna's only hope of not losing herself entirely in her dead-end New Jersey suburb, circa 1982; as she moves through her world, half-numb, she keeps one cool eye on her escape route--art school in Manhattan. "What are you afraid of?" her first lover asks as he kisses her. "I'm afraid of being ordinary," she responds. Anna's struggle to get out before she loses her will is one that many, including the actress herself, can identify with: Weil fled her hometown of Lansdale, Pennsylvania--"good," she says, "for car dealerships and fast food franchises"--at eighteen, having already spent six years commuting to New York for auditions. Presumably it's Weil's understanding of what it means to be caught between the force fields of surrender and striving that makes her character's battle for freedom palpable, unsentimental, and finally, searing.
