Biography: Sydney Tamiia Poitier (born November 15, 1973, in Los Angeles, California, USA) is an American actress best known for her work on television. She was a recurring character in season one of Joan of Arcadia, where she played Rebecca Askew, the love interest of Joan's older brother, Kevin, and was briefly a regular on Veronica Mars before the show opted to focus on different characters and she was dropped from the cast. Her role in both series was related to journalism - on Joan of Arcadia she worked at the same newspaper as Kevin, and on Veronica Mars she was Veronica's journalism teacher. She is the daughter of actor Sidney Poitier.
Sydney Tamiia Poitier: her father broke down barriers in the movies. Now she's breaking audiences up When she got the lead role in the new UPN sitcom Abby, Sydney Tamiia Poitier couldn't quite believe it. The 29-year-old actress had been in several movies, but she'd never even guested on a TV comedy, much less starred in one, and she wasn't sure she'd be funny enough. As it turns out, this five-foot-ten beauty is a natural in the title role, playing a sports show producer who's just dumped her live-in boyfriend only to learn that he's not about to leave their rent-controlled San Francisco apartment. The complications in love and life that follow give Poitier, daughter of Oscarwinning actor Sidney Poitier and actress Joanna Shimkus, a chance to display wit and grace, in addition to the considerable comedic gifts she never thought she had. DIANE BARONI: Before Abby you hadn't done any sitcom work at all, How did you come away with a starring role in one? SYDNEY TAMILA POITIER: I hadn't even thought of auditioning for a sitcom, because I didn't feel that it was a genre I had any talent for whatsoever, but my agent sent me the script and I thought, Wow, this is well developed and witty and intelligent. It wasn't your typical sitcom--you know, setup--punch line--so I went on the audition. I didn't make it at first, so I kind of forgot about it, and I was actually a little bit relieved. I thought, Okay, I tested the waters of the comedy genre, and now I can retreat to my safe drama haven. But about a week later I got a call saying they wanted me back in, and it moved superfast from there. I got the job on Friday, and by the next Friday we'd taped the pilot. It all happened boom-boom-boom. It was crazy--a total baptism by fire. DB: And now that you've been at it a while, are you having more fun being funny? STP: [laughs] Yes, definitely. I've found out that I really, really enjoy comedy. It's got a rhythm all its own. When I did theater in college, I was petrified before I went onstage. But being in front of live audiences has loosened me up. It's been good desensitization for me. Sitcom audiences are different-they're totally on your side. DB: How did your parents react when you told them you wanted to be an actress? STP: They were always supersupportive. But I was encouraged to have some sort of backup plan. They wanted me to be cautious and to know just how difficult it is to have an acting career. So while they were supportive, they were also smart and tried to get me to think things through. DB: Does having a famous father make it easier or harder for you as you try to make your own name? Which is going to be really difficult, considering it's virtually the same as his name. STP: [laughs] For an actress, it's priceless having somebody to talk to who's a veteran of the business. And people are naturally curious [about me], because I share the same name with him. I mean, you really can't ignore it. It's funny: I use "Tamiia" [professionally], because the Screen Actors Guild said you can't have two actors with the same exact name.
